Quality of Life in Reno, Nevada: A Small-Town Community with Big-City Amenities

If you’re looking to move or expand your business to the Reno/Sparks industrial area, you likely are already aware of the economic benefits that our region has to offer (and if you aren’t, head over to our

Resources page for more on Nevada Economic Development Incentives). But what about quality of life for your family and employees?

Beyond the benefits that Nevada offers businesses are the countless benefits it offers residents. Northern Nevada has the inherent and appealing combination of a small-town community with big-city amenities.

University of Nevada, Reno

Established in 1874, the University of Nevada, Reno is a National Tier 1 University and one of the nation’s top public research universities. Its College of Engineering has put Nevada researchers at the forefront nationally in a wide range of civil engineering, earthquake and large-scale structures testing and modeling.

Quick facts and details:

  1. The student population is 21,000 students and that number is rapidly growing due to affordability as Reno/Sparks’ tech sector continues to boom.

  2. The university offers 426 degree, certificate and minor programs and 129 graduate programs, with a $36 million Student Achievement Center.

  3. The university offers a classic college experience with attractive residence halls, beautiful brick and ivy buildings, a campus lined with century-old trees, an involved student government, active fraternities and sororities and competitive Division I athletics.

  4. The university makes Reno a true college town – this is clearly a community that loves its school.

Reno-Tahoe – The City

Affectionately known as “The Biggest Little City in the World,” Reno has a population of 430,000 people and offers a quality of life that is hard to match.

Reno’s residents experience many cultural activities including multiple museums, theatre companies, symphony, ballet and opera. There are many venues for sporting events and concerts including the Reno Events Center, Reno Livestock Event’s Center and Lawlor Events Center. Various districts and events in the city offer no shortage of things to do.

  1. Midtown District – Located between South Virginia Street and Holcomb Avenue, Midtown is a special part of Reno that is experiencing huge growth and revitalization. This area is a commercial-centric corridor in the center of town that is just south of downtown and features an eclectic range of businesses from one-of-a-kind restaurants to mom and pop hardware stores. Midtown is smallest, most business-dense part of Reno.

  2. Downtown Reno – Rich in activities, arts and culture and in the midst of major revitalization and a new life, this area is home to attractions such as Reno Aces Ballpark, Riverside 12 Movie Theaters, National Automobile Museum, Nevada Discovery Museum, Nevada Museum of Art and The Basement at the Historic Post Office. Downtown Reno also offers many shopping options, fine dining and casual restaurants and an active nightlife including casinos, bars and nightclubs.

  3. Annual festivals and activities – When it comes to events, Reno is in a class of its own. From concerts to food festivals to the world renowned Burning Man festival, Reno and Lake Tahoe offer celebrated events year-round.

Reno’s Western location also offers short trips to the major US cities of Sacramento and San Francisco, California – two and four hour drives respectively.

Outdoor Recreation

Northern Nevada is also renowned for its outdoor beauty and variety of adventure options, including:

  1. Winter activities like skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and ice skating

  2. Spring/summer/fall activities like golf, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, whitewater rafting and fishing

And with more than 300 days of sunshine every year, there’s plenty of time to enjoy it all. Lake Tahoe is a 30-minute drive from downtown Reno, and Reno-Tahoe has the highest concentration of slopes in North America. The Truckee River flows from Lake Tahoe through the heart of Reno and Sparks, creating summertime activities like kayaking and whitewater rafting, fishing and tubing.

With an easy commute through the city, quality education, and four distinct seasons, Reno has found itself on many national lists of top ten cities in which to live. If our combination of excellent quality of life and economic benefits appeal to you and you’re considering leasing or buying industrial real estate in northern Nevada, Beki Dobson at Miller Industrial Properties can help.
